Sun-Dried Tomato Eating La De Das

Inspector Grim. One of my heroes. Played by David Haig in the TV britcom “The Thin Blue Line”. Great show if you’ve never seen it. Relatively unknown (or at least forgotten) compared to other great British comedies. Also starring Rowan Atkinson and written by Ben Elton who are both comedy legends of course.

Expect more highlights of unsung heroes from me. It’s not all Apples y’know.

Don’t Flat-Back Me Now Apple

Lost & Found iPhone 4th Gen

Lost & Found iPhone 4th Gen

So it seems a prototype version of the 4th generation iPhone has made its way out into the open. Gizmodo has the exclusive and a letter from Apple to confirm it’s real. Apparently it was dropped in a bar in Redwood City. Ouch – someone at Apple is now minus a job (and maybe a few limbs).

My hope is that the new flat-back look isn’t the final casing. It’s not that I don’t like the look of the device as it stands alone, it’s just that it deviates from the curved-back sported by the rest of the mobile iFamily. Sitting on a shelf amongst them, it’ll look out of place. I suppose over time, if this is the new design-direction, that will change but it’ll put a slight dampener on my new iPad which could be the last of the surface rockers :(

iPad Delay Causes Me To Import

I sensed it coming. There was only 2 weeks left to go until the international release date and yet Apple was suddenly a little shy on the iPad-front. I would have expected another ramping up of the hype and marketing but there was none of that. I briefly sighed a little relief when their online stores went down for an update, only to re-confirm my suspicions even stronger when they came back up. I don’t care about new models of Macbooks Apple – what about the iPads!? Nothing still. Something was wrong. And sure enough, on April 15th they announced delays to international availability, citing “surprisingly strong U.S. demand” as a reason for the rest of us to wait longer until the end of May. Grrrr.

Well I’ve waited long enough. I’m fed up with seeing the iPad mentioned on every blog I read (oh the irony). Seeing so many great apps and ideas explored and not being able to join in is painful. I’ve got apps of my own to build, websites to test, games to play, screens to smudge. Either I tie a knot in my feed reader for the next month or…

25 iPad YouTube Videos

I always like finding these kinds of posts on other blogs. Here are 25 (!) of my favourite iPad YouTube videos to date. They demonstrate some wonderfully creative ideas already – amazing given the short time the SDK has been available. I can’t wait to see more interactive books, musical instruments, games, art apps, real-world accessories and all kinds of original ideas emerge over the next few years.

My self-made iPad

My self-made iPad (doesn't do a lot)

Welcome to my new blog. It’s about my 10th. The chances of its long-term survival are bleak I’m afraid. The good news is that you’re reading the very first post so my enthusiasm and itch-to-write is currently completely disguising the time-investment required to keep on posting! I’m also, once again, under the utter disbelief that this time will be different. I guess we’ll see…

My main reason for firing up WordPress this time is to rant on about iPhones and iPads. I can’t stop talking about either of them lately so I’m hoping to channel some of that obsessive ear-bashing away from my wife and work colleagues towards here instead.

I’m currently waiting to get my excited, smudge-spreading fingers on an iPad. The Australian release date can’t be more than 3 weeks away and I’m poised to hit the pre-order button the moment it goes online. It’s been tough watching and reading about all them lucky folk in the US who have them already but the staggered release has been a mixed blessing.
